In brief – where do I start?

Here are the steps to take to become an apprentice or trainee:

  1. Choose your occupation
Check the list of apprenticeships or traineeships and narrow your choices down to what interests you. Get as much information as you can about your choices from school counsellors, ABL Apprenticeships Centre , your local library, www.skillsroad.com.au and other job sites. Next, talk to people working in the jobs that interest you. Speak to their employers — ask lots of questions!

  2. Find an employer
You must be employed to be an apprentice or trainee. Thousands of employers hire and train apprentices. For help finding a job, go to www.skillsroad.com.au

  3. Apply
Once you have an employer, contact ABL Apprenticeships Centre on 1300 363 831. An ABL Apprenticeships Centre consultant will visit your workplace. You and your employer complete the application form, and ABL Apprenticeships Centre will help you complete all the paperwork.

  4. Sign the contract
The contract is a formal agreement between you, your employer and your TAFE or other registered training organisation (RTO). It outlines who's responsible for what during your apprenticeship or traineeship. You promise to complete your work and training. Your employer promises to pay you the correct wage and increase your pay as you progress through training. The employer agrees to train you on the job, and to allow you to attend off-the-job training.
