Eels sing the praise of vocational career opportunities

With HSC results released tomorrow, many of the 71,310 school leavers in NSW will be contemplating their career options as they move into the next phase of their lives.
NSW’s largest provider of apprenticeships and traineeships, Australian Business Limited Apprenticeships Centre (ABL Apprenticeships Centre), says that there are now more options available for school leavers than ever before, and that more students are choosing a vocational career path.
“An apprenticeship or traineeship is a great way to start your career and develop skills that will set you up for life, whilst achieving a qualification and earning a wage at the same time” said Andrew Williams, General Manager of ABL Apprenticeships Centre.
“Traditional trades, such as those in the building and construction industry, like plumbing, carpentry and roof tiling are fashionable, and the good news for these trades people is that there is great demand, seeing them set themselves up for a lifelong career with great earning potential.”
The Parramatta Eels are no strangers to the benefits of vocational education. In fact, most of their senior and under 20’s players are completing diplomas, apprenticeships or traineeships as part of the clubs commitment to supporting players in establishing a career for life after football.
Kevin Wise, Education Manager for the Parramatta National Rugby League Club says “the Parramatta club has been running an off-field development program for players for a number of years, with many players and other staff undertaking traineeships and apprenticeships. The NRL and Rugby League Players Association have made it compulsory for NYC players to work or engage in formal study, or they can’t play.”
“In 2010, we’ve had 28 of our NRL squad players undertake a Certificate IV in Frontline Management and now 20 of them have signed on to complete a Diploma of Management in 2011. In addition there are 13 other NRL squad players completing university or other courses” said Wise.
HSC school leavers interested in undertaking an apprenticeship and traineeship should visit skillsroad.com.au to find out more or phone ABL Apprenticeships Centre on 1300 652 236.
