Cessation of the Innovation Commencement

The Innovation Commencement Incentive ceased on 12 May 2010.
Australian Apprentices who commence on or after 12 May 2010 will not be eligible to attract the Innovation Commencement Incentive for their employer.

More incentives needed to support trade apprenticeship employment

Government needs to do more to reduce the burden on business associated with taking on an apprentice, according to a policy submission by the NSW Business Chamber.
Prior to the economic downturn, NSW faced a significant shortage of skilled workers in many sectors. Even with a decline in skilled vacancies following the economic downturn, many tradespeople are aging and expect to retire or move on in the next few years.

Budget — new incentives for employers

The 2009 budget includes a $3.8 billion investment over four years to encourage employers to take on and retain Australian Apprentices.

The Government aims to protect Australia’s skills base and maintain the flow of fully qualified tradespeople, needed to support economic growth as we emerge from the downturn.
